Graceful Decorator Crab    Oregonia gracilis

This interesting crab is in the same family as the Kelp crab.  However it differs in having hairs on its legs and back which allow it to attach bits of sponge (as seen in the photograph) or any other material that will allow it to blend in with the background.  They range in size to 2 inches based on the width of the carapace or shell.

The Decorator crab ranges from Japan to Alaska and south to central California.  They inhabit the low intertidal zone to a depth of over 1000 ft.  They are most abundant in shallow water on a variety of sediments including rocks and under floats.
